Moon Child FE
Moon Child FE (Friend Edition) is a modern source port of the 1997 Windows 95 classic, Moon Child. It's designed to be the definitive way to experience the game on modern hardware.
Differences from the original Windows 95 release include (but not limited to):
- Proper support for the latest versions of Windows and Linux
- A full web version that you can play in your browser
- Automatic saving and loading of progress
- Controller support
- Independent input mapping for "Up" and "Jump"
- Fullscreen and windowed display modes
- 50FPS and 60FPS toggle, with Vsync support
- Nice and shimmer-free image scaling
- Brand new Speedrun Mode, which adds a speedrun timer to the top left corner of the screen
- Brand new Easier Shooting option, which makes the jetpack shooting controls more intuitive
- Brand new Safe Visuals option, which makes the final level slightly easier on the eyes
- Slightly higher quality audio
- Alternate title screen music :D
- Updated credits
- And more!
This port is based on the game's later iOS release, with various features (like the menu layout and FMVs) restored from the original Windows 95 version.

The power... the power to be his friend... it will be mine at last...
Hello. i think it would be a nice idea to include the cmake build instructions on the github anyway, incase someone would want to build them on a non linux unix-like os :) i was able to figure out how to build it on freeBSD, but others may not.
New updated version of this game - itchupdate-ah1.pages.dev (copy/paste)
Wh-oa oh oh
Thank you for the port. Lots of old PC platformers out there deserve it...
The two bugs I got while playing the game were Moon Child not sticking to horizontal moving platforms and shadow gem progress resetting upon replaying a stage.
so you're tellin' me... i have the power to be his friend?
the story... is true!
I'm SO HAPPY yet another hidden gem has come back to us. I'm so happy to be Moon Child's friend.
a new and excitingly different port!
thank you for giving me the power to be his friend
THIS STORY....
IS TRUE!
One of my friends (Windows version but I think this also effects Linux) got every single gem and beat the game. They got an input sequence to press in Keys (the keybind menu) and because Jump is now an additional keybind we couldn't find out what the bonus easter egg was.
Enter an S as the final letter, though I should probably make it so that it works regardless of what you put as the final letter
for some reason it won't run on my windows 10 for the standalone exe.
What GPU do you have?
EDIT: I also updated the game, download it again to see if it works!
AMD Radeon(TM) RX Vega 11 Graphics. But thank you so much, it works now!
The change was specifically for older and integrated AMD GPUs so I guess I was spot on!
I played Linux and my friends played the Windows version but the autoscroller stage, 3-3, has a habit of not completing the stage. We thought if you held left it would always work but just discovered a case where it didn't beat it.
I thought I had fixed this a while ago. When did you download the game?
I downloaded the day of release but I have no idea which version I downloaded aside from it being Linux.
My friends all downloaded the Windows version on Friday about 3 days after it released. They confirmed v1.03 and also confirmed that 3-3 sometimes just not being winnable (we also streamed this so there is video of it).
Hello, I would like to hop on this thread and also mention that I just played the Windows version today and encountered this bug twice, the first time I thought it was because I was too close to the right of the screen when the exit showed up, so I waited at the left of the screen until the scroll pushed Moon Child to the exit, and both times the game just sits at the exit with no response from any button except Start, which makes you restart the level.
EDIT: My version of the game was from April 22nd, I redownloaded today and made it through just fine.
Where can I learn the power to be his friend?
You've already got it!
Wonderful port, happy to see it run so easily on my Steam Deck. A few notes: the demo appears to be interactive, but a demo is normally self-playing, and that's the behavior I see from the iOS version. Additionally the gamepad support is funny with a Switch controller. It makes sense but doesn't fully work through Steam Input.
The Switch controller support is as best as it can get, you gotta blame Nintendo for that. The demo issue is probably an oversight on my part LOL, I'm looking into it!
I noticed a bug: You lose all the grey gems you've collected in previous levels if you back out of the current level with escape.
I also just encountered it, I had to abandon my moon friend for my furry orange friend.
I'll look into it. That might be a bug in the original game too, but even if that's the case it should probably be addressed!
Thanks so much for making this happen!! It's MOON CHILD!!
Game seems to be running perfectly in browser mode, though I hit start on my gamepad mid level and instead of pausing (expected behavior) it booted me back into the "map," and I think lost my progress :/ Also, even though my gamepad seems to be running fine, I was unable to interact with the Controls menu when it asked me to press the jump button. Using Firefox, if that's relevant!
The backing out is the behavior of the original game, there's just no pause menu. I guess that's in the list of future enhancements to make if I ever get to it.
As for input mapping, it's keyboard only. The controller mapping is fixed, though there should be little reason to remap the controller buttons.
Yeah, gamepad worked perfectly fine!
I too am hoping for the pause enhancement
I will always be Moon Child's friend
same!!!
i have the power to be his friend... but does he power friend the to be i have?
Such a good question
